One of our neighbors in Florence once told me that on weekends, they often take their kids to nearby Lucca because they can cycle on the city walls, stroll through the peaceful historic center, visit a museum, enjoy lunch at a restaurant without crowds, and then comfortably return home in the afternoon. And it’s true! Lucca’s greatest charm is the overwhelming sense of tranquility that radiates from it.

Entering the perfectly preserved city walls through any of its gates feels like stepping into a place where time has stood still. Its history speaks of immense wealth, which always granted Lucca privileges unlike other Tuscan cities. It was the only city Cosimo de’ Medici did not annex into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and it was the last city to sign its unification with Italy.

As a city founded by the Romans, you can still see the outline of the ancient amphitheater in the square that bears its name. Its legends, saints, and heroes transport you to an era where faith, salvation, and fear of damnation were the driving forces of life.

In Lucca, I always chat with the locals. They are kind, welcoming, and delighted when I tell them that I will soon be bringing Hungarian groups and visitors to their city. Once, in a church, a woman shared a well-known saying still used today: “Better a death in the house than a Pisan at the door.” Ah, yes—the good old Tuscan rivalries! Of course, there’s a reason for this, and I’ll be sure to tell the story.

No visit to Lucca would be complete without a culinary experience, because I firmly believe that a journey becomes a lifelong memory when it is paired with flavors. And here, there certainly will be!
