For a long time, I avoided offering sightseeing tours in Pisa. We had already been living in Florence for several years, yet I resisted the city with its tower “held up” by tourists and its attractions seemingly concentrated around a single square. Then one day, I received a phone call with an offer to regularly lead English-language tours in Pisa for a Swiss agency. Would I be interested? After a little thought, I said yes and began studying and preparing for my big encounter with the city. In the end, nothing came of the offer, but Pisa fascinated me more and more. It drew me into its golden age, into the heart of its history as a maritime power and its immense wealth, while also allowing me to feel the pain of its decline. I am still discovering Pisa to this day, and since then I have shown many of my guests the unique acoustics of the Baptistery, the hidden treasures of the Cathedral, the fascinating facts and figures behind the Leaning Tower, and my personal favourite: the frescoes of the Camposanto. Today, I am always happy to board the train to Pisa and enthusiastically introduce my guests to this fascinating city and the traces of its former glory.
